Privacy policy

The short version

The measurements you type into any calculator on this site are processed entirely inside your own browser. They are never sent to us, never written to a server, and never stored anywhere after you close or reload the page. We could not look them up if we wanted to.

What we collect

Measurements you enter

Nothing leaves your device. The arithmetic runs in JavaScript on the page. There is no form submission, no server that receives them, and the analytics described below never carry them - it records which pages were visited, not what was typed into them.

The one exception is deliberate and under your control: the "copy a link to this result" button puts your two measurements into the page address so that the link reproduces your result. That link is created only when you press the button. If you share it, whoever opens it sees those numbers - treat it as you would any other link containing personal information.

Local storage

Up to three small items are stored in your browser and never leave your device: your light or dark theme preference (theme), your answer to the cookie question if you were asked it (consent), and, for the length of one visit, the country code used to decide whether to ask (cc). None of them is a cookie. Clearing your site data removes them.

Visit statistics

We use two services to count visits, so we can see which pages are useful:

Neither receives your measurements, and neither is used for advertising.

Server logs

This site is served as static files by a hosting provider, which keeps standard request logs containing IP address, user agent, requested URL and timestamp. These are generated by the hosting infrastructure for security and reliability purposes, are not linked to anything you enter, and are not used by us to build any profile of you.

Cookies

The only cookies on this site are Google Analytics': _ga, which holds a random number to tell a returning visit from a new one, and _ga_…, which keeps track of the current visit. Both last up to two years.

In the UK, the EU, the rest of the EEA and Switzerland they are not set unless you allow them. Visitors there are asked once, with "Allow" and "No thanks" side by side. Until you answer, and if you say no, Google receives only cookieless signals that a page was viewed. You can change your answer at any time with "Cookie settings" at the foot of every page; saying no deletes the cookies already set.

Elsewhere, the analytics cookies are set on your first visit.

Advertising

There is currently no advertising on this site and no advertising scripts are loaded; analytics is set to refuse all advertising use. If advertising is added later, this section will name the provider, describe what it collects, and link to its own privacy policy, and the consent mechanism described above will be in place first.

Third parties

Apart from the two analytics services above: no font CDN, no embedded video, no social widgets, no comment system. Every asset the page itself needs is served from this domain.

Children

This site is a general-audience reference tool and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children; the visit statistics above do not identify anyone.

Your rights

Under the UK GDPR, the EU GDPR, and comparable laws elsewhere, you have rights of access, rectification, erasure and objection over personal data held about you. We hold nothing that identifies you; analytics data is held by Google under its own policy, and clearing your cookies or answering "No thanks" removes what links it to your browser. Requests about hosting logs will be passed to the hosting provider.

Changes

Any material change to this policy will be reflected in the "last updated" date above, and will be made before the practice it describes begins rather than after.
